A wine weekend in Stellenbosch

Known to locals as ‘Eikestad’ and named after the large number of shady oak trees gracing the sidewalks, the homely town of Stellenbosch is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway.

You could easily leave the office on a Friday and be at your Stellenbosch guesthouse or lodge within the hour, complete the check-in, and be sipping a glass of wine on the veranda before sunset.

Being South Africa’s second-oldest town, it is rich in awe-inspiring historical architecture and culture.

Wine Farms

Since this is a post about a wine weekend and the reason you’re here, let’s not muck about and get straight into some of my top recommendations.

Louisville

Probably one of the best-kept secrets in Stellenbosch.  Arty and strikingly modern, with amazing views, great food, and delectable wines.

Middelvlei

Over and above their fine wines, they offer a unique wine blending experience where you can create your very own blend (like a real scientist with tools and stuff) to take home with you.

Delheim

Since you’re by now already over the allocated daily calorie limit, you may as well try the Cupcake and Wine tasting at Delheim. Yes, cupcakes and wine DO mix so give it a try!

Spier

Take a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch on the lush green lawns next to the dam or under the magnificent oak trees – the choice is yours.

Stellenbosch has an overwhelming amount of top wine farms, all with excellent quality wine varieties and unique experiences, so these are just a few to get you started on your journey of becoming a wine connoisseur.

Accommodation

With a picking of self-catering, guesthouses, and lodges, it’s not difficult to find something to your liking. If you are looking for something with a little more luxury, one of my absolute favourites has to be the Cape Dutch vernacular style De Zalze Lodge.

This beautiful four-star lodge overlooks the vineyards and Stellenbosch mountains and promises a revitalising and unforgettable stay. Hubby can head out for a quick 18 holes on the adjacent De Zalze Golf course while you laze around next to the pool, or head out for a wine tasting or three.

More than just wine

There are other things to do in Stellenboch of course.

Explore the town on a Walking or E-Bike tour, visit the Stellenbosch museum or the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

If you’re just visiting Cape Town and need a vehicle to get around in you can head over to Drive SA for some great deals.

Holidays aren’t all about African Safari’s, beaches, and lengthy road trips.  A short weekend away close to home is sometimes all you need to feel rejuvenated.
